Hard to believe it’s been two years since I wrote about the first movie, but here were are. I was also late in getting out to see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, but considering I liked the first so much I was determined to see the second in the theater. It got panned by most of the critics but the geeks I know that saw it seemed to like it. I was again pleasantly surprised and will be buying it on DVD. To put that in perspective, I don’t think I’ve bought a DVD since the first one.
[~~SPOILERS BELOW~~]
The Good
- Soundwave’s absence in the first one was listed as a negative so I’m glad he showed up in this one. While he wasn’t the tape deck I remember from my childhood, the voice made it all okay. Ravage was cool, but I would have liked to see Laserbeak.
- Shooting a scene in the Udvar-Hazy and turning the Blackbird into a transformer was very cool.
- I was pleasantly surprised at the use of occasional adult themes. Profanity, some minor drug-related humor and chicks flashing their skivvies make the teenage boy in me happy.
- The GM-ness was seriously toned down. The appearance of an Audi and a few motorcycles made it just a wee bit cooler.
- The adaptation of The Primes was respectable.
- Lots and lots of gunfire and military vehicles.
- Megan Fox.
The Bad
- The twin autobots were pretty stupid. There is some talk of them being racial stereotypes but I disliked them more because they were just plain goofy.
- The “zoom in during transforming and fights” part was still there. It’s annoying and makes me cross-eyed.
- All the same people were in this movie, plus a few more. Not everyone has to reprise their role, Michael Bay, let them go.
- Transformer/Terminator robot freshman chick thingy. It’s been done and it’s just plain weird.
I saw it this afternoon and was incredibly let down. There were more times that I laughed about how stupid it was than the times I thought it was cool.
I haven't been out towards Dulles in a while, but when did they put in that mountain range outside Udvar-Hazy?
I think I felt the same way about Wolverine that you do about Transformers. It probably has something to do with what you were most "into" as a kid. I liked Transformers when I was younger but not nearly as much as X-Men.
I'm a child from the 80s, what can I say.
