It seems everyone has seen Star Trek, and really liked it, so I won’t bother writing a book about it. I think there was a lot of hype surrounding it, at least it seemed everyone was talking about it, so I tried to temper my expectations going in. I think I got exactly what I expected, which is both a good and bad thing.
While I thought it was generally entertaining, I do have one major objection. [spoiler alert] I think the writers took the easy way out by creating the “alternate time line” in the movie. I understand why they did it but I really do see it as cheating. I’m not even a Star Trek purist but I don’t think you have to be to feel cheated that the series can now go off in a completely different direction.
I guess that’s where I’ll have to draw the line on my recommendation. If you’re looking for an action-packed science fiction space movie, by all means, go see it and have a good time. If you’re looking for the next chapter in Star Trek and only care about it in name, it’ll work. If you want a true homage to the original Star Trek series, you’ve already seen it and probably didn’t like it.
