Life and work is sorta nutso right now (see below) so I’m gonna try and make this quick. I apologize in advance for typos ’cause I’m definitely not going to be proofreading.
Vegas Vacation
On Wednesday of last week we decided to book a flight to meet some friends in Vegas this past Saturday. Originally from London, they’re vacationing in San Fran for a few weeks and wanted to go to Vegas. They’d never been and we hadn’t seen them in awhile so we agreed. We stayed until Wednesday of this week and ll in all it was a great trip with friends who are very similar to us. We’d never done Vegas with another couple and it’s definitely a very different experience… in a good way.
We stayed at the Luxor and I mean it when I say that place has really hit the wall since I saw it last a few years ago. It’s run down and filled with trashy people but not in a good way like the casinos downtown. We didn’t gamble there at all but rather hoped around to all the cheaper casinos because lets face it, gambling is gambling and there’s no point in playing a $10 or $15 min when you can play $5.
Speaking of gambling, I was happy with my results. For the most part I was relatively even throughout the trip aside from dropping $100 in 10 minutes of Three Card Poker. I was $150 down going into our last night of gambling but made $50 of that back. We played craps for 2-3 hours and at one point I was up $150 but gave $100 of that back. Playing for three hours and still winning $50 is fine by me. I ended up down $105 for the trip, including dealer/waitress tips.
Our last night there we ate at Neros in Caesars. The restaurant was great but we had reservations at 8pm and had just eaten wings at Hooters at 3pm. Why Hooters? Well, our friends wanted to get wings since they’re really available in the UK and I wanted their steamed oysters. Not only were they out of the oysters, the wings were also reheated and done so poorly. They made us somewhat sick and come dinner time none us were really in the mood to eat. I ordered two appetizers as my main, foie gras and beef marrow , because there was no way I was finishing a steak. They’re both extremely heavy but as two of my favorite dishes I had to get them. I’m disheartened to report that not only did I not finish my marrow, I was also unable to eat the rest of my friend’s foie gras… who didn’t make it more than 4 bites in. It’s a sad, sad state of affairs when that stuff gets sent away, especially given the price.
Nintendo DS
After some recommendations from a few people and my current propensity for travel I decided to pick up a Nintendo DS. I haven’t bought a new game system since the original XBox and I can’t say I’ve really missed having the latest and greatest. That said, I think getting a DS was the right move. Not only can I play games on planes, in airports, hotel rooms and pretty much anywhere else I want, I can also play via local wireless against anyone with a DS even if they don’t have the game. Most people believe it’s for kids but with games like Brain Age 2 and a very simple interface, it’s great for adults too.
It proved invaluable on the trip to Vegas for killing time in the hotel room and on the plane. I also managed to beat the little lady in almost everything we played so it has the added bonus of ego boosting. It’ll get a serious workout on my upcoming business trip to India (yes, India) with Jeff. He himself has a DS and we’ve already discussed at length how much I’m going to own him. It’s two 9-hour flights plus a layover in Frankfurt to get there so we’ll have plenty of time to battle it out.
I guess that does it. So much for short.
18+ hours of DS to and from India. It’s on!
Be sure to get your plane power adapters!
