Everyone’s heard the horror stories about identity theft and how easily it is for your credit to be screwed up for a very long time. Considering how integral your credit is to your financial viability in today’s world, checking your credit should be something everyone does. I check mine once a year via AnnualCreditReport.com, which is the freebie set up for us by the federal government. I just checked mine and everything looked good but unfortunately your actual score isn’t part of the free report. I used this same site to check my report about 3 months before we bought the new house to see what my standing was. It turns out I had an old college medical bill listed as in collection, several years overdue, despite having paid it off a long time ago. I disputed the listing and with a bit of supporting evidence, got it changed to settled. Interestingly enough, a mortgage lender actually asked about it and I sent them the dispute info, which they accepted as explanation. My story is fairly benign, but who knows what’s lurking in your report. You should check it out if you haven’t already, it’s free afterall.
