I heard through the grapevine the Gaim, now Pidgin because of copyright concerns, had released its 2.0 version recently. I’ve been a loyal user and fan of Gaim 1.5 for some time so I figured I’d try out the new version. I backed up my previous copy just in case something went haywire and I wanted to fall back to 1.5. The upgrade was easy as most of my settings ported over to the new version. I got online in no time only to realize that I’m not really feeling Pidgin 2.0. The feel is completely different and the most important plugin, Guifications, didn’t appear to work. Couple that with a hideous buddy status indicator in the buddy list and I was convinced it probably wasn’t for me. I put in the due diligence to make sure it wasn’t a setting or easily installed plugin and when that failed I uninstalled. Unfortunately the removal of Pidgin 2.0 broke a key piece of Gaim 1.5 so even my backup copy would hang at sign on.
Along comes OldVersion.com to the rescue. Their motto is “because newer is not always better” and I subscribe to that as I’ve used this site quite a few times to install older releases. I snagged the Gaim 1.5 installer, reinstalled it over my exisiting copy and everything was back to normal including all my various plugins and customization. So thank you OldVersion.com for being there for people like me who get whored when products are changed [cough] more than they should be.
