As I’m sure you’ve heard, mostly because I’ve been blabbing it all over social media, I recently bought a Ducati. Me doing so might seem random to the casual onlooker, but I can tell you it is something I spent half my life planning for. No seriously, it was seeing the 916 back in high school that lit my fire for no only Ducati, but motorcycles in general. I knew it would only be a matter of time, I just wasn’t sure when that time would come.
In all honesty, I thought it would be later than now for a couple of reasons. First and foremost was the price. I’ve been watching prices on Ducatis for years and they’ve always been waaaaaay more than I was willing to spend. I also thought Ducati was making fairly ugly bikes for awhile, so dropping that sort of cash on something I wasn’t crazy about was even less of a possibility. After following their every move for years, I was happy to see the company get back to their design roots in the last couple.
Then a funny thing happened… well, two things actually. Around the same time, I noticed that not only were prices on the 848 starting to come down, I was not spending nearly as much time on a motorcycle. I rode the Suzuki less because my friends stopped riding and time on the cruiser was slashed significantly because Melissa and my riding time was being spent doing things like bicycling and hiking. Realizing I’d have 80-100% of the purchase price of an 848 if I sold my two, it became somewhat of a no-brainer.
Buying the Ducati first, or a Ducati at all for that matter, was largely because a ridiculous deal fell into my lap. Sure, I’d have to drive to North Carolina to pick it up… but I would save 20% off the DC area asking price in the process. The amusing side effect is I currently own three motorcycles (yes, I realize how absolutely ludicrous that is) and I need to unload two come spring (higher prices) to make room in the garage. Ironically, I’m actually looking forward to just having one motorcycle again.
So about my new 848. Well, I’m sure I could ramble on about a bunch of different specs that either you don’t care about or mean nothing to you. If you’re interested in that stuff, google it. Instead I’ll leave you with the simple statement that this thing is faster than anything I’ve ever driven/ridden and it will take some serious getting used to. Okay, I lied… I have to give you at least one sets of numbers. You know I’m a sucker for numbers. Below is the power to weight/power ratio for all vehicles currently in my possession. The lower the number, the less weight it has to move with each horsepower so ultimately, the faster it is.
Subaru Legacy – 14.5 | Porsche 944 – 14.4 | Honda VT750 – 6.6 | Suzuki SV650S – 5.9 | Ducati 848 – 3.1 |
Umm… yeah. Suffice to say, I’m stoked. I still can’t believe I own one and part of me reverts back to a 16 y/o boy when I realize I do. 🙂
