Reading is Fundamental

It’s no secret that I hate reading. That’s actually unfair to say. What I should say is I have a horribly short attention span and my interest in reading, when it involves large amounts of text, wanes very quickly. I can honestly say that before grad school, I think I’d only ever finished reading three books in my lifetime. It’s not something I’m proud of and am somewhat jealous of those who love to read.

That’s not to say I don’t read; I consume massive amounts of information from the Internet on a consistent basis. I have more RSS feeds than I care to share and I’m always reading articles, blogs and other random crap in an effort to quest my thirst for knowledge. This method allows me to learn a little about a lot, but I think it fosters focus fragmentation (say that three times fast) and breeds restlessness.

The truth is I’m pretty sure I love books. I had a subscription to Simply Audiobooks for about two years and made it through 30+ books. Some were just okay but others were plain amazing. I enjoyed the feeling of finishing a good book and looked forward to finding the next great one. My subscription is long gone and reading for school is a memory (thankfully), so it’s probably time to refocus my efforts.

Believe it or not, I actually keep a running list of the books I want to read. It’s a list that, for as long as I can remember, has had things added to it and never removed. I’m publishing it below in an effort to motivate myself; I have no idea how well it will work. There’s a decent mix of books here and I’m sure they say something about me. I’m partway through the first three and have (access to) numbers four through eleven… but I don’t think that means much. We shall see.

  1. The End
  2. The Nasty Bits
  3. Twist of the Wrist 2
  4. Fugitives and Refugees
  5. Survivor
  6. Hagakure
  7. I Know You Got Soul
  8. The Moment It Clicks
  9. Hot Shoe Diaries
  10. Nineteen Eighty-Four (audiobook)
  11. The Kite Runner (audiobook)
  12. Inner Speed Secrets
  13. Survive!
