Racing Recap

This past weekend marked the first round of racing in 2007. I felt like I wanted to do an in-depth write-up of what took place over the course of the event but it’s now Wednesday and I’m feeling far less motivated than I was earlier in the week. As a result you’re going to get the bulleted list of events.

  • Weather was perfect on Saturday. Sunday was cold and rainy, which made for an interesting race. Failure to leave proper time to adjust tire pressures and suspension settings led to a pretty sloppy car. Lesson learned.
  • We seemed to have an inordinate amount of mechanical DNS cars. Of the dozen and a half cars that were registered, at least a quarter didn't even make it to Saturday's race. The effects of sitting for the winter caught up with them I guess.
  • Cracked a rotor after Saturday's race due to the bigger brakes up front superheating the old(ish) rotor. Replacing the rotor would have been a half hour job but we mistaken used an air wrench to tighten the bolts that attach the hub to the rotor. Four of the five bolts stripped due to too much torque and we spent the next two hours drilling them out. It's not every day you get to make a wrenching job last ten times longer than it should. Lesson learned.
  • I finished 3rd on Saturday and 4th on Sunday. The drivers that finished ahead of me on Saturday did the practice day on Friday, which means they had far fewer cobwebs than I did. Sunday, I did all I could just to keep the car from spinning because of the aforementioned setup issues. Both of these facts definitely showed in my lap times and I really can't be too upset with the result given the circumstances.

All in all it was a good time. It was nice to get back out on track and see all the track folks. We do it again in 4.5 weeks and hopefully I'll have some better stories to tell or better finishes to talk about. Feel free to check out my somewhat uninteresting videos:

  1. Smoking in the Uphill Esses (4.3mb)
  2. Short-Cutting South Bend (3.7mb)
  3. Mis-Shift for 2nd (3.4mb)
